Renovating one of the last-built homestead cabins in America

  • Date: April 2020 - April 2023
  • Role: Builder

In April, a group of friends and I purchased a 2.5 acre plot of land in Yucca Valley, about 30 minutes away from the Joshua Tree National Park. As we were in the height of the pandemic, and everything was now remote, we all moved down to the property, and lived in an RV. There was a cabin on the property built in the 60’s as part of the Homestead Act, but it never got finished or repaired, and was in a decrepit state. We immediately got to work on a blueprint for the renovations, and set about getting the required permits. In the mean time, we cleared the ground to make a driveway, built a shed, and built 1200 feet of fence surrounding the property.

However, due to the slow nature of permits, we were not able to start on the actual building of the cabin for over a year. When we finally got the clearance, all of us had moved for work, and we were unable to spend the time required to build it. We were incredibly lucky to find an amazing contractor, who we have been working with closely to coordinate the building of the cabin.

At this point, the cabin is complete! We have listed the property on AirBnB and similar services. Check it out!
